Creative Art in the Group Home
In this project, children from residential group homes engage in creative work in the plastic arts under the guidance of an artist. The artist, who may specialize in any of the plastic arts – painting, sculpture or photography – works with groups of children in various forms of artistic activity. In addition, the artist holds special sessions for select children who are encouraged to work on a high-quality artistic creation which will enhance the physical environment at the home. The following are a few examples of such creative work: A sculpture – A group of children creates a sculpture together, and are full partners in all stages, from planning and design of plastering or clay models, to construction and, finally, painting and finishing. The completed creation, which is generally quite large, can serve as a permanent display in the yard or in another prominent public space in the group home.
A mosaic wall – Groups of children, together with an artist choose a subject for their creative work. After researching the subject, each child draws a segment of the picture and together the children create a composition. They then add the mosaic pieces, made of ceramic tiles that the children themselves cut into squares.
Prints – The children learn what a print is and create their own prints using a portable manual press that the artist brings to the group home. It is possible to prepare an exhibition or decorate a wall with the prints. This activity may include up to 40 children in a group.
