Twenty Years of Activity for "Yeladim – Fair Chance for Children" "Yeladim – The Council for the Child in Placement" celebrated twenty years of activities with the participation of Gila Katzav, wife of Israel's President, Ehud Ohlmert, then Secretary of the Treasury, Galia Maor, CEO of Bank Leumi, and many of the organization's volunteers and contributors, on Wednesday December 28th 2005, at the President's home in Jerusalem. During the evening, Gila Katzav, a volunteer for many years with children at risk in group care through the Council for the Child in Placement, told about her experiences working in the Center for Preschoolers at Risk in Jerusalem. She presented the Council's special award to several people whose contribution had helped to change the life of children in group homes, offering them more equal opportunities in their lives: Ehud and Aliza Ohlmert – On their contribution as a host family for over twenty years to Shula – a child in group care (who is now married and has children). Nir Lampart, incoming Executive Director of "Yellow Pages", and Moshe Ronen, outgoing Director, on the establishment of a unique countrywide network of "Yellow Pages" units that have adopted 14 group homes for children at risk, and on personally recruiting additional organizations to volunteer through the Council. Leon Tziman, Executive Director of the Israeli Music Channel 24, and Roy Edri, the musician who created Hip Hop, on contributing the song "Together" towards the welfare of children in group care, and on their unlimited contribution of screen time to raise awareness among youth about children at risk. Clairette Ascher, Chair of the "My Album" project, and her 35 volunteer photographers who create personal albums for children in group care in order to document the present for the future. Sabby Mionis, a generous contributor to the Council, a resident of Greece, who arrived specially for the event, and who contributed a play room for toddlers at risk, and who has enabled 150 children to participate in an important learning assistance project. During the evening Prof. Dan Shnit announced the establishment of a Weiner Family Research Fund which will offer grants for research that contributes to the welfare of children in group care. He noted the 70th birthday of Dr. Anita Weiner, the first Chair of the Council, and one of the organization's founders, Prof. Dan Shnit was the evening's Master of Ceremonies. |
